Before getting a Dog
Dogs are often said to be our best friends but before getting a dog there are a few questions you ought to ask yourself.
-Do you have time to care for a dog? Dogs need attention 24 hours a day 7 days a week. They can live for at lease 12 years. Think ahead and see if your ready for this long term relationship and commitment.
-Do you have enough money to care for a dog? Dogs can be expensive, food, equipment, vet fees and anything else a dog might need over it's life.
-Do you have space for a dog? Where will he live. Dogs like to explore and exercise. They need somewhere to walk everyday.
-Does your lifestyle suit a dog? Are there other pets or young children to consider. Are you in work everyday. What happens when you go away on holidays?
Understanding Your Dog
Dogs are pack animals and have developed a range of communication based on
body language and odours. Understanding these is the best way of getting to know
and care for your dog.
- Howling, barking and destroying objects
can be signs of stress caused by being left alone.
- To avoid aggressive
confrontations dogs often lie down lifting a leg. This signals that they are not
a threat.
- Some dogs go into a forward stance, tail held high, ears alert,
maintaining eye contact. This behaviour is very dominant and requires firm
control.
- Urine scenting is like humans shacking hands and provides
information about the other dog.
- Dogs especially puppies play fight.
They learn how to assert dominant authority.
- Dogs often do a
play-bow. This signals to other dogs or humans to "come play with me"
